“Thanks.” Reese nodded, pushing her empty cup to the side.

She glanced at her watch and said apologetically, “I’m afraid I have to go. I have to get back to work. I’m still working splits.”

“Of course,” Tory replied, rising to walk out with her. She was growing accustomed to Reese’s devotion to her job and also coming to recognize that working was what made her comfortable.

She wished their evening wasn’t at an end. And she wished even more that she hadn’t enjoyed it quite so much.
